LAFAYETTE, La. — As many as six Chalmette High School students were taken to the hospital after five St. Bernard Parish school buses and a truck pulling a band trailer were involved in a crash on Interstate 10 in Lafayette, La., on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Lafayette Police Department, the incident occurred shortly before 12:47 p.m. on I-10 westbound near Mile Marker 103B.
Lafayette Police said the crash occurred as a result of one of the buses colliding with the rear of a bus in front of it creating a chain reaction with the rest of the buses.
Police also said the injured students, who were members of the CHS Band and Charmers Dance Team, suffered mild to moderate injuries in the crash.
School officials said the students were headed to McNeese State University to compete in the LMEA State Marching Championships.
According to the school, more school buses are on the way to pick up the students, staff and chaperones to bring them back to the parish.
This is a developing story.
