ST. JAMES PARISH, La. — Parts of St. James Parish are experiencing a natural gas outage, according to officials Wednesday evening. Parish officials said if residents in South Vacherie smell gas, they should call 911 first and then 225-562-2500.
The outage affects Highway 20 to the back of Vacherie on the West Bank, a release said. "The West Bank system is separate from the East Bank system. There are no impacts to the East Bank of the parish."
The parish said the issue is related to the supplier.
Parish President Pete Dufresne addressed the outage in a video post on Facebook.
"This issue has been resolved," Dufresne said. "But it's going to be a long and tedious process to restore everyone's natural gas back to its original operation."
Most importantly, do not attempt to turn your pilot light back on yourself.
Utility crews will work overnight to fix the issue. Dufresne said crews will go door to door to the homes impacted, in order to turn the pilot lights back on.
Parish officials will notify residents when gas is restored.
Once gas is restored residents are asked to call 225-562-2500 to have a pilot light turned on.
