Sex offender poses as federal officer, attacks deputies in custody

Brad Rivere, 41, accused of impersonating a federal officer to influence a civil dispute and violently attacking deputies while in custody.

NEW ORLEANS — An Assumption Parish man with a history of violent offenses is facing a slew of new charges after authorities say he impersonated a federal law enforcement officer and later attacked jail deputies in a brazen display of defiance.

Brad Joseph Rivere, 41, of Napoleonville, was arrested on Dec. 3 after repeatedly calling the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office about a civil dispute, according to a news release. When his calls didn’t get the response he wanted, Rivere took his complaints to the Sheriff’s Main Annex, the release said.

That’s when, officials said, he crossed a line.

Rivere falsely claimed to be a federal officer in an attempt to sway the outcome of his issue, the Sheriff's Office said. Detectives, who knew Rivere as a convicted sex offender, immediately saw through the ruse. He was arrested on the spot and booked for false personation of a peace officer and a probation violation.

But Rivere allegedly wasn’t done making trouble, according to the release.

The Sheriff's Office said that less than 24 hours after his arrest, Rivere turned violent inside the Assumption Parish Detention Center. Corrections officers were attempting to relocate him within the facility on Dec. 4 when Rivere allegedly launched a physical attack, officials said.

He’s accused of assaulting deputies, trying to wrestle a weapon from one of them, and resisting with enough force to prompt additional charges:

  • Battery of a Police Officer (2 counts)
  • Disarming of a Peace Officer
  • Resisting an Officer with Force or Violence

Now, with bond set at $25,000 for the false personation charge and no bond allowed for the probation violation, he awaits a hearing for the jail assault charges.
