School bus driver saves eight students from smoking bus that caught fire

"This was something that I never experienced," Rousseve said. "For me to save my life and them kids' lives, that was a real good thing that I did."

NEW ORLEANS — A school bus driver is being credited with saving eight children after a malfunction caused the bus to catch fire, according to Nola.com.

Our partners spoke with Kia Rousseve, who shared photos of the incident. She said that it happened after 7 a.m. Wednesday morning, when the bus began to lose power and smoke.

"This was something that I never experienced," Rousseve said. "For me to save my life and them kids' lives, that was a real good thing that I did."

She pulled over in and got everyone out just before the fire began, Nola.com reported.

Rousseve has been driving school buses for three years and started working at Community Academies last month in February, she said.

She had six more stops on her Uptown morning route, headed to Lafayette Academy when the bus started having mechanical issues.

Her supervisor released a statement saying, "Her ability to stay calm in the face of danger, ensuring not a single child came to harm is nothing short of heroic."
