RTA to receive $3.5 million from city for Algiers Ferry operations

The funding comes as RTA takes next steps toward the $9.7 million terminal renovation project planned for 2025-2026
The Regional Transit Authority (RTA) said it's months away from renovations on the Algiers Ferry Terminal.

NEW ORLEANS — The RTA will receive $3 million from the City of New Orleans’ 2025 Budget to support operations at Canal Street-Algiers Point Ferry.

According to the RTA, the city council approved the allocation on Tuesday –  a move championed by District C Councilmember Freddie King III.

“Our community’s voices have been heard thanks to Councilmember King’s dedication to a ferry service that will continue to link the East Bank and West Bank, underscoring the value of collaboration between the RTA, local stakeholders, and municipal authorities," said Fred Neal, Jr. RTA Board Chair. "These kinds of investments guarantee that our neighborhoods stay linked and reachable."

The funding comes as RTA takes next steps toward the $9.7 million terminal renovation project planned for 2025-2026. The RTA says approximately 500,000 passengers use the Algiers Ferry annually.

“On behalf of the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA), thank you for your steadfast advocacy, dedication, and hard work in securing $3 million from the city budget to support the Canal Street-Algiers Point ferry operations,” said Lona Edwards Hankins, RTA CEO. “This critical investment will ensure the continued operation of this essential transit hub, serving as a lifeline for our riders and the Algiers community”

The RTA says Hankins will continue to work with City and State leaders to identify a permanent funding solution for the ferry operations.

Approval for the 2025 Draft Budget to the Board of Commissioners is set for the December meeting to close out 2024.
