Mylar balloons blamed again for power outage in Orleans Parish

According to a social media post from the New Orleans City Council Utilities Committee, a “cluster of Mylar balloons” came in contact with power lines.

NEW ORLEANS — Mylar balloons were to blame again for knocking power out to Entergy customers in Orleans Parish Sunday morning.

According to a social media post from the New Orleans City Council Utilities Committee, a “cluster of Mylar balloons” came in contact with power lines and knocked power out to 1,272 Entergy customers at about 8:35 a.m. Sunday. Power was restored at about 8:52 a.m. the Utilities Committee said.

This is the second incident of a power outage this week reportedly caused by a metallic Mylar balloon.

On Tuesday, Entergy New Orleans said a Mylar balloon hit a power line and caused the power outage, which prompted the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board to issue a citywide boil water advisory.

During that time, Councilman Joe Giarrusso called the situation the parish is in, frustrating.

"This is, the balloon that caused the trip to go on at Sewerage and Water Board, then there was the issue with the gentleman who was severely injured. Why were things not more automated with him? Why was he the only person who seemed to be there? Why wasn't he tended to much faster? We're really looking at it," he said of that power outage earlier this week.

The councilman says because of this, he's pushing for an ordinance they hope will prevent something like this from happening again, which it did on Sunday.
