NEW ORLEANS — A police chase on Friday afternoon resulted in one of the New Orleans Police Department pursuit vehicles allegedly crashing into a utility pole along the St. Charles Avenue streetcar line near the Thalia Street intersection, causing a power outage in the area.
“Entergy is aware of additional outages in the Uptown area, which we believe are related to this afternoon’s incident. Crews are working as quickly and safely as possible to restore service," a spokesperson for Entergy New Orleans said.
The incident also resulted in an injured officer.
The incident occurred shortly before 12:30 p.m.
The incident was initially reported via an Instagram post from @NOLA_crimeupdates, claiming several vehicles from multiple law enforcement agencies were said to be involved in the chase.
The NOPD confirmed that an officer in the unit was injured in the crash.
There are no updates as to the degree of the officer's injuries.
The NOPD says the vehicle, which was being pursued as it was suspected of being involved in a violent crime, was not captured therefore there is no confirmation it was the same vehicle in question.
Power was restored for almost all Entergy customers around 5:10 p.m.
Initially, Entergy power outage maps showed more than 2,000 customers initially affected by the outage before eventually rising above 6,000.
“Entergy is aware of an outage currently impacting approximately 1,300 customers in the Lower Garden District," an Entergy spokesperson told WWL before power was restored. "A car struck a utility pole near 1,300 St. Charles and damaged a cross arm. Our crews are working as quickly and safely as possible to restore service.”
This is an ongoing story and will be updated once further information becomes available.
