BELLE CHASSE - It was a day of mourning in Plaquemines Parish. On Monday, a visitation and funeral were held for Parish President, Amos Cormier Jr.
"I'm here to pay my respects to a good man," said St. Bernard Parish Director of Homeland Security, John Rahaim Jr.
A funeral procession was held early Monday morning. It was led by law enforcement from several different agencies including the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, Kenner Police Department and Louisiana State Police. They led the way to Cormier's final resting place at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.
"Today is a day we think about Cormier's family," said acting President Kirk Lepine. "First and foremost, they are in our hearts and prayers."
Hundreds came to pay their respects to the man they say was a dedicated leader. One-by-one, each person lined up to say goodbye. Many were overcome with sadness and could be seen consolling one another.
"I think they'll remember him as a man who wanted to do what's right, somebody who fought for them and stood up for them," said Rahaim.
"He was willing to go above and beyond whatever he could do for people," said Lepine. "That's the main thing I'll remember about him."
Cormier was elected Parish President in 2015 but died unexpectedly last Thursday following a procedure to unblock an artery. Some were at a loss for words. Especially those who knew him well.
"We were in a meeting last Monday and he showed up to see what was going on," recalled Rahaim. "He spoke to me briefly, talked about the past few months and that's the last time I saw him. When I heard about the news of what happened I was really shocked."
Cormier may be gone, but friends know he'll never be forgotten. Because those who knew him say the love this husband, father, and leader had for Plaquemines Parish was felt by all.
"I know he's looking down right now seeing all of us here. We're going to miss him," said Rahaim.
"His roots went deep through the whole Parish and it's affected everyone," said Lepine.
Cormier was married for 47 years to Aurele Moinet Cormier, and was father to Amos III, Arthur, Mack, Jene Cormier, and Meran Simonson. He's also remembered by his parents, Amos and Lucy Cormier as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.
