UPDATE: Newman student arrested after threats shut down school

NEW ORLEANS -- A 15-year-old has been arrested after allegedly making an online threat that shut down Isidore Newman School on Thursday.

The teen was arrested at his home, police announced Thursday afternoon. Three rifles and a shotgun, all owned by the teen's father, were found during a search.

"During the investigation, officers learned that on the morning of Wednesday, March 29, a 15-year-old male identified as a current student at the school posted a photograph on the Snapchat social media application displaying several weapons on a bed with a statement reading, 'Don’t come to school tomorrow,'" police said.

The school closure was announced by Newman officials Thursday morning.

"Last night we learned that posted on social media was a threat of violence at our School. We worked through the night with a core administrative team and with our threat assessment consultant to evaluate alternatives and make decisions," said Dale Smith, head of school.

According to the New Orleans Police Department, around 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Second District officers were told about the threat from school officials.

The post was shared with several of the teen’s friends, before Newman school officials were notified of the online post that night.

"However, out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to cancel school on Thursday and to cancel parent conferences on Friday. The safety of our students, families, and teachers remains our top priority. Thanks for your understanding and support," said Smith.

The teen was booked one count of each of terrorizing, intimidation and interference in the operation of schools.
