NEW ORLEANS -- There are nine days until the new University Medical Center opens. All the staff and doctors and nurses involved in the move are on schedule.
On Aug. 1, all the patients from University Hospital (The LSU Interim Hospital) will be moved into the new UMC.
The staff of 2,000, along with 600 faculty doctors from LSUHSC and Tulane, have been practicing moving mock patients.
The hospital is so big, they have also been practicing learning their way around and the best routes to move patients to the O.R, and which doors and elevators to use.
And while the entire hospital won't immediately open, there are jobs open now with many more to come in the next few years.
"It will be hundreds (of jobs available). We're going to grow from a capacity of what we have currently, which is about 240 beds, to the capacity of this facility is 446 beds, so all that entails in terms of staffing," said Siona LaFrance, communications officer for UMC.
Nurses are always needed, as well as other health professionals, such as dietitians, technologists, occupational, physical and respiratory therapists.
The outpatient clinic will not open on the new campus until Aug. 10.
