NEW ORLEANS — The man accused of killing waiter Hilbert Walker III at Mandina’s has a long criminal history, including a gun charge.
He’s also accused of injuring a customer at the mid-city restaurant during the April 28 shooting.
Last week, the NOPD released this video of 22-year-old Kyron Fazande when officers were looking for him as a person of interest in the case.
Monday, law enforcers caught up with Fazande at a home in Fort Bend County Texas near Houston.
He was booked on a charge of second-degree murder in the death of Hilbert Walker III, attempted second-degree murder and aggravated battery.
Walker’s father told WWL-TV; he’s glad Fazande is now in police custody.
“I hope he gets what he deserves,” Walker said. “I forgive him for what he did and I’m praying for him and his family also. I’m very glad they caught him.”
WWL-TV has learned at the time of the shooting, there was a bench warrant out for Fazande in Jefferson Parish.
JP court documents indicate he pleaded guilty to possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting an officer last October.
He was sentenced to two years of unsupervised probation for that crime.
In January, he was held in contempt for refusing to appear in court and a judge ordered his arrest.
Fazande also faced charges in St. Bernard Parish.
He pleaded guilty to illegal possession of a weapon in October 2021.
A judge sentenced him to 4 years in prison for that crime.
According to the Louisiana Department of Correction, Fazande was released on Goodtime Parole on June 22, 2022.
“Since his release, Fazande had been compliant, meeting routinely with his Parole Officer, maintaining employment and a residence. He had no known violations until the recent alleged homicide and out-of-state arrest,” DOC spokesman Ken Pastorek said.
“They keep getting a slap on the wrist,” Walker said. “That’s why they keep committing crimes. I just hope this time it won’t be the same. I’m praying and hoping for that.”
A spokeswoman for the Fort Bend Sheriff’s Office confirmed Fazande remains in the county jail as of late Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Fort Bend District Attorney’s Office, Fazande waived extradition, so will be brought back to New Orleans to face charges in the Mandina’s shooting.
