NEW ORLEANS - Hope is a two-year-old pitbull terrier mix who is searching for a caring home and a responsible owner.
She is one of hundreds of animals up for adoption at the Louisiana SPCA and the longer she stays, the higher the likelihood she could be shipped off to another kennel.
Ana Zorilla, the director of the LASPCA said, "It is a little unusual as we have seen a surge much earlier in the year than what we typically do, we are closer to about 500 animals and they just keep coming."
The shelter has over 200 different cats, 200 different dogs, even rabbits that need a home soon.
Zorilla said one issue is crowding as they try to not to put so many animals in one cage. The other issue is cost.
"It takes a lot," Zorilla said. "There is volunteer resources, foster home, and the financial resources it takes to move them if we can find a shelter to take them."
The group has seen a lot of puppies and kittens come through the doors, but also a lot of adults dogs at unseasonably high rate.
The concern is there may not be enough people coming through the doors as animals.
"That is always our biggest concern. We can have more coming in than going out," Zorilla said.
