OPSO inmates attempt to start fires multiple times in past 12 hours

"One deputy was advised to go to the hospital, and one inmate was sent to the hospital, out of an abundance of caution due to smoke exposure."

NEW ORLEANS -- An inmate attempted to start a fire in the Orleans Parish Jail, starting what officials call "a smoke event."

General Counsel for the OPSO Blake Arcuri said this is just one of multiple attempts in the past 12 hours.

"On May 17, 2018, an inmate attempted to light a flame-resistant jail uniform on fire in Pod 3-C of OJC, causing a smoke event," Arcuri said. "Unit 3-C houses inmates who have violated rules of the OJC and are serving disciplinary sentences as a result."

Officials say the fire was contained to one cell and quickly extinguished.

"One deputy was advised to go to the hospital, and one inmate was sent to the hospital, out of an abundance of caution due to smoke exposure." Arcuri said.

This section of the jail has had similar incidents in the past 12 hours according to officials. They are currently under investigation.
