Oprah Winfrey pays homage to New Orleans Four during DNC speech

It was previously revealed that Winfrey would make a convention appearance, but it wasn’t clear what she would be doing, or whether she would endorse Vice Presiden

NEW ORLEANS — Talk show legend Oprah Winfrey appeared at the DNC on Wednesday night.

“Good evening everybody!” Winfrey shouted in tones she once used to open her talk show, and proceeded with a speech to a crowd in her hometown Chicago.

She pitched independent voters, saying she herself is a registered independent. Winfrey spoke about decency on the ballot and paid homage to John Lewis and the first generation of students who helped integrate schools, whom we refer to as the "New Orleans Four."

Winfrey told a story about Vice President Kamala Harris was born the same year that the Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education court ruling made segregated schools unconstitutional.

"They [the New Orleans Four] broke barriers, and they paid dearly for it, but it was the grace and guts and courage of women like Tessie Prevost Williams that paved the way for another young girl who nine years later became part of the second class to integrate the public schools in Berkeley, California," Winfrey said.

Oprah also said to choose loyalty to the Constitution over loyalty to any individual.

Winfrey closed with a resounding shout of “Let us choose Kamala Harris!”
