NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Police Department, along with a number of other agencies, is planning to clear out the abandoned naval base in the Bywater on Thursday morning.
Members of the community occupying the facility will be offered housing assistance.
Neighbors and business owners in that area have complained for years that unhoused people have set up camps inside the facility. And that there has also been an increase in crime in and around the property.
The property has been vacant since 2011, when the Navy moved out and handed it over to the city.
