Fire breaks out in Steamboat Natchez engine room, no injuries reported: NOFD

The steamboat is currently docked in the industrial canal for maintenance.

NEW ORLEANS — A fire broke out in the Steamboat Natchez engine room Tuesday night.

According to the New Orleans Fire Department, the fire started around 8 p.m. while the boat was docked in the Industrial Canal for maintenance.

Firefighters went into the steamboat through the smoke and "aggressively attacked the fire while operating in extremely hazardous conditions," NOFD official said.

Crews were able to confine the fire to just the engine room, according to NOFD, limiting the damage to just that one room.

According to NOFD, crews were torching switch gear panels in the engine room earlier in the day, but ended around 5 p.m. — three hours earlier than the fire. That work likely led to the fire, according to officials.

The fire was under control as of 9:01 p.m. in total, eight units carrying 24 NOFD personnel responded to the fire. No one was injured.
