Group trying to recall Mayor Cantrell turns in signatures after 6 months

The group celebrated with a dance and a speech, claiming they have enough signatures to trigger a recall election for the Mayor.

NEW ORLEANS — Six months after the group to recall Mayor Cantrell first formed, it addressed the press on Wednesday afternoon with a celebratory dance - and a proclamation that they have enough necessary signatures to trigger a recall vote.

Organizer Eileen Carter spoke to the press, saying that it's proof you never give up on your dreams.

"We have done our job, and so now it's time for the registrar of voters to do their job," Carter said. "...We have been playing a game of strategy. They thought we were a bunch of residents who didn't know what they were doing, but look at us now. We ask you to trust us."

Carter said they want the recall election to be held as soon as possible, preferably the Spring.

Mayor Cantrell has found herself in the forefront of numerous controversies over the past year. Examples include her getting into a verbal altercation in the bathroom at a rap concert, and standing by the side of a carjacking suspect during a criminal trial.

Most recently, she caught fire for flipping off a float during a Mardi Gras parade -  which was followed up by the recall group's announcement that they had reached its goal.

The city has also been plagued by violent crime and seemingly never-ending road projects that have forced residents to find new routes to get around.
