You could hear those garbage trucks coming down your streets even earlier

In an effort to help protect sanitation workers from the dangerous heat, the N.O. city council will consider an ordinance allowing trash pickup as early as 4 a.m.

NEW ORLEANS — You could start hearing the rumbling and clattering of New Orleans garbage trucks down your street even earlier during the hottest months of the year.

In an effort to help protect sanitation workers from the dangerous heat, the New Orleans city council will consider an ordinance allowing trash pickup as early as 4 a.m. so that it is cooler during their routes, according to a report on NOLA.com.

Currently the city rules allow trash pickup only between 5 a.m. and 8 p.m.

According to the NOLA.com report, Sidney Torres, the owner of IV Waste, said he supports such a measure as a number of his employees are experiencing dehydration and heat-related symptoms.

Torres said Thomas' proposed ordinance would allow his workers to finish their routes by 10 a.m. or so rather than by 11:30 or noon.
