Multiple Orleans residents displaced after fire from vacant building spread to nearby homes

The fire ended up consuming most of the vacant building while also heavily damaging the neighboring homes.

NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Fire Department is investigating the cause of a two-alarm fire at 2179 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard Saturday afternoon that spread to neighboring properties, according to a press release.

NOFD said that there were no injuries and the fire started at around 1:13 p.m. on Saturday from a vacant building with no utilities that nearby residents said was commonly occupied by vagrants.

The fire ended up consuming most of the vacant building while also heavily damaging the neighboring homes, which resulted in multiple residents being displaced. Those displaced will be assisted by the Red Cross, according to the press release.

NOFD said they are investigating the cause of the fire.
