NEW ORLEANS — The Algiers Ferry will continue to operate with hours from 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. after a pledge from Mayor LaToya Cantrell to cover a projected $3 million shortfall in 2024, councilman Freddie King said Wednesday.
The ferry was facing a cut in operating time by six hours daily and King concedes that the operating budget in 2025 will likely require even more money to keep those current hours.
The RTA had been threatening to cut the hours to a 9 a.m. start and a 7:30 finish each day, causing a problem for people who travel on the ferry for work.
“It is my understanding that the $3 million will be given to RTA to keep the ferry hours current,” said King. “The mayor has signed a letter of intent, promising the funds. I’ve spoke to the administration, the CAO. The funds have been promised.”
Algiers is already having issues with its bus service to downtown New Orleans with nearly daily delays or cancellations of bus routes over the past two months.
