NEW ORLEANS -- Maple Street area neighbors awoke Thursday to discover several potholes had been filled with oyster shells.
Tulane professor Richard Campanella snapped a few photos and shared them to Twitter with the caption, "New Orleans-style tactical urbanism: Maple Street neighbors fill potholes with oyster shells."

One Maple Street neighbor was not so amused. Edie Elders Cruz, owner of Vanity Salon & Spa & Spray Tan on Maple Street, posted two photos to the WWL-TV Facebook page to help bring awareness to the potential dangers the shells could present.
"This is dangerous to cyclists, pedestrians and animals being walked on a leash crossing the streets," Cruz said. "The shells are already being scattered by traffic. I'm contacting every news media, and I'm calling the police."
Cruz said one of the holes that was filled is located on Hillary Street and was, at least, one foot deep and two feet wide. Cruz said she spotted four other holes filled with oyster shells on nearby Maple Street.
