Mayor warns parade goers to not approach floats, stay out of street

Cantrell said the NOPD would continue to enforce “crowd setback standards,” including regulations that require ladders to be six feet from the curb.

NEW ORLEANS — Mayor LaToya Cantrell sent out a reminder to residents about parade safety following the fatal accident where a woman was killed by a float in the Krewe of Nyx parade Wednesday night.

The accident, where a 58-year-old woman was killed after falling between two parts of a tandem float, caused half of the parade’s floats and marching bands to cancel their part of the parade.

"This morning our hearts are too heavy as many are waking to the news of last night's tragic accident during the Krewe of Nyx parade," said Mayor Cantrell. "While we must wait for the results of the investigation, we both mourn the loss of life during what is supposed to be our time to celebrate our life and culture here, and continue to be mindful of all safety practices during the Carnival season. Please exercise caution during parades and elsewhere on the streets."

Cantrell said the NOPD would continue to enforce “crowd setback standards,” including regulations that require ladders to be six feet from the curb and not tied together.

She also reminded parade goers to stay back as floats roll by and not to go after beads or other throws that land near the float. Also, people are told not to cross between floats or marching units.

People who attend the parade in an area that is barricaded should stay behind the barricades, while those on the street or sidewalk side are advised to stay off of the street.
