NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell is one of several U.S. mayors traveling to Dubai for COP28, the annual climate change conference conducted by the United Nations.
Cantrell will join fellow delegates in the Local Climate Action Summit to discuss the extreme weather and financial challenges some cities are facing, and how mayors can protect their citizens and communities from negative impacts.
The conference began on Thursday and will continue through Dec. 12.
According to our media partners at The Times Picayune | New Orleans Advocate, Cantrell's spokesperson John Lawson declined to share details of the trip on Thursday but confirmed that the administration would soon release a travel advisory about the trip.
Other members of the U.S. Conference of Mayors scheduled to join USCM trustee Cantrell, include:
- Columbus (OH) Mayor Andrew Ginther, USCM Vice President
- Washington (DC) Mayor Muriel Bowser, Chair of USCM’s International Affairs Committee
- Burnsville (MN) Mayor Elizabeth Kautz, USCM Past President
- Des Moines (IA) Mayor Frank Cownie, USCM Trustee
- Columbia (MO) Mayor Barbara Buffaloe, Chair of USCM’s Environment Committee
- Tom Cochran, USCM CEO and Executive Director
The trip marks the third international trip for Cantrell this fall, including a trip to France in September and one to Kenya earlier this month.
Cantrell has faced criticism for taxpayer-funded travel and flight upgrades, which is a violation of city policy.
