Man identified from Causeway crash; video footage released

Rescue workers recovered the body of a man whose truck went over the side of the Causeway Bridge and into Lake Pontchartrain Sunday morning.

NEW ORLEANS -- Rescue workers recovered the body of a man whose truck went over the side of the Causeway Bridge and into Lake Pontchartrain early Sunday morning.

According to Causeway Commissioner Carlton Dufrechou, a JPSO dive team recovered the body of a man in his mid-forties, who was later identified as Evan Jefferson, 33, from Lake Pontchartrain with the help of the Coast Guard.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office at 3:45 a.m. that there was debris and a damaged guardrail on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway.

It was also reported that causeway police reviewed video and saw vehicle headlights prior to the guardrail damage that disappeared soon after, indicating that a car had gone into the water.

The body was transported to the Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

The Causeway's southbound side was closed until about 11 a.m. Sunday.
