Locals react to Pope Francis' encyclical

Pope Francis released his 250-page encyclical covering a myriad of issues affecting families of the Catholic faith.

Archbishop Gregory Aymond said, "He does a great job of explaining the importance of marriage and family life and the complex issues we are dealing with in that regard."

Loyola director of Ministry, Dr. Tom Ryan, said the Pope is telling the church to show compassion and adjust to a changing society.

"I think one of the powerful things about this document is he is encouraging people to realistic. We need to deal with what's there. He's not saying this is what the book says and this is what you need to be."

The document looks at divorce and how the church should handle the issue and the people involved.

Melissa Duncan divorced over a decade ago and has since re-married.

She said the annulment process can be hard, but the Pope's approach can help with the healing process of the individual.

"It is coming from a place of love and mercy as opposed to judgment and who is at fault here. The theme is about love and mercy. "

Archbishop Aymond said, "What he does say and what he has been saying as Pope is we as a church are a family. God gives up on no one and we shouldn't give up on anyone."

The document speaks to the topic of same sex marriage where the Pope stands by the scripture which states the union is between a man and woman.

The Archbishop said that doesn't mean same sex couples should be treated any differently.

"We as the Church must be public in saying people of same sex orientation and couples must be respected and loved."

The Pope's encyclical is available online and can be read in its entirety.

The archbishop will hold seminars is the coming weeks on the teaching within the document
