'It went white' | Drivers share eyewitness accounts of fatal I-10 super fog crash

Truck driver Chris Ward was on his way to Mobile to drop off a load. WWL-TV spoke to him on the phone as he finally started moving.

NEW ORLEANS — Many drivers were on their way to work Tuesday morning when 'super fog' caused multiple crashes on I-10 in New Orleans East.

Chuck Fanz commutes from Slidell to Kenner every weekday.

“Drove straight across the Twin Span, no issue," Fanz said.

But after he got off the Twin Span, he started to notice more fog.

“There was a fog, but it was drivable, and then, instantly on a dime, it went white. I’ve duck hunted all my life. I’ve never seen it turn that quickly where I couldn’t see the front of my truck," Fanz said.

Fanz said he started tapping the brakes, giving drivers behind him a warning.

“What’s going through my mind, I’m thinking about last week, what happened on Interstate 55," Fanz said.

Fanz, like countless others, found himself in bumper-to-bumper traffic. He eventually figured out what was causing the backup—an 18-wheeler on its side.

Fanz safely made it to work, but others were stuck in traffic for hours.

Truck driver Chris Ward said he didn't move for nearly five hours.

Ward was on his way to Mobile to drop off a load. WWL-TV spoke to him on the phone as he finally started moving.

“Just opened the left lane, and you can see all the debris and everything from the trucks. There were several tow companies that came out and we’ve seen them pass with some of the vehicles, and they were, I mean, there was a Dodge Dakota that basically had no roof left. It looked like a drop top convertible," Ward said.

Both drivers have a message for other motorists.

“Slow down," Fanz said.

“Take your time. Be late for work," Ward said.
