NEW ORLEANS — The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans issued a boil water advisory Saturday morning for part of New Orleans East.
The area under the advisory has been limited to the Oak Island subdivisions and the part of Michoud bounded by: Red Maple Drive, Maplewood Drive, Bayou MIchoud to Dwyer Road, Dwyer Road to Kim Drive and Kim Drive to the levee.
The shutdown happened after a fire hydrant was struck on Caddo Place near Michoud Boulevard, SWBNO said.
"SWBNO crews are responding and repairing the hydrant. Once it has been fixed and water pressure has been restored, water quality samplers can begin collecting samples for testing," SWBNO said Saturday morning. "Customers in other areas of the city are not affected and do not need to boil their water."
SWBNO also listed the following precautions for people who live in the area:
- Washing hands: Use soap and tap water, dry hands, then apply hand sanitizer; the safest option is to wash with bottled or boiled water.
- Showering or bathing: Be careful not to swallow any water. Infants, young children and disabled persons should be supervised to ensure water is not ingested. Residents with open wounds, chronic illness or weakened immune systems should use boiled or bottled water to bathe until the advisory is lifted.
SWBNO has asked residents to call 504-529-2837 with questions. The water board said they will notify residents when the advisory has been canceled.
