Barge strikes pier near Mardi Gras World where Mayor's Inauguration Ball being held

Officials say no one was injured in the incident.

NEW ORLEANS - A barge struck a pier near the Mardi Gras World building, where Mayor Cantrell is holding her Inauguration Ball Monday night, officials say.

According to NOFD Chief Tim McConnell, a tugboat pushing four barges struck the pier around 7 p.m. near the building and knocked out a few feet of the wharf.

"It hit the wharf, knocked a large section out of the wharf that the building was sitting on top of that caved in some," McConnell said.

He says no was injured in the incident, and the building where the mayor's ball was being held was not impacted.

The Mayor posted on Twitter about the incident saying the ball is "still on" and crews have inspected the area and deemed it safe.

The Coast Guard is investigating the incident.

Viewer submitted video shows part of the pier broken and submerged in the water.

More information is expected to be released shortly.
