New Orleans sinkhole swallows debris, cones and cars

A Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV found its front passenger-side wheel axle-deep in a newly formed sinkhole.

NEW ORLEANS — The sinkhole at the Dixon Neighborhood intersection of Peach Street and General Ogden is apparently not the only wheel swallower in the city.

Three days before a New Orleans school bus filled with children got its right rear tire stuck in a deep pothole on Tuesday, a black Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV found its front passenger-side wheel axle-deep in a newly formed sinkhole on the edge of the French Quarter.

The tire was flattened upon impact.

The popular Instagram account called "Look At This F----- Street,” posted images of the incident that occurred on St. Philip Street as the motorist turned off North Rampart in front of the popular French restaurant MaMou.

Restaurant employee Brian-David Daigle shot the photos and told WWL Louisiana he has personally seen six to seven vehicles sustain tire blowouts due to hitting the hole.

WWL Louisiana's Stephen Melancon captured video of the sinkhole, which is filled with debris and traffic cones.

A day after barriers were put in place to cordon off the area from vehicles on Wednesday,  the city began repairs to the hole.
