Power restored after fire at Entergy power station

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

NEW ORLEANS — A fire at an Entergy power station knocked out customers' power on the West Bank Friday morning. The outage lasted for about 4 hours.

A spokesperson for Entergy New Orleans told WWL Louisiana, “This morning, NOFD responded to a fire at an Entergy substation in Algiers. This created an outage that impacted approximately 9400 customers. Entergy crews are working as quickly and safely as possible to restore service.”

The New Orleans Fire Department responded to the fire at 8:48 a.m. in the 6700 block of Patterson Street. The first NOFD unit arrived at 8:55 a.m. and they had to break through a gate to get to the fire. Eight other NOFD units with 27 firefighters worked to get the fire under control at 9:43 a.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Officials say there are no known environmental concerns at this time.

The outage has also affected the Wastewater Treatment Plant and Sewer Pumping Stations on the West Bank. According to the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans, flow to the plant was stopped because the sewer pumping stations are offline.

Around 1 p.m., the S&WB said, "our Westbank Wastewater Treatment Plant and Sewer Pumping Stations on the Westbank are now back online utilizing Entergy power. All Drainage Pumping Stations are online and ready for any potential rain. Customers are now free to return to normal water usage. The Westbank Water Treatment Plant was not affected, customers do not need to boil their water."
