NEW ORLEANS — A woman was killed in a house fire in Gentilly early Wednesday morning, New Orleans Fire Department officials say.
Around 10:30 p.m., firefighters responded to a fire at a two-story home in the 4600 block of Annette Street. When they arrived, they saw heavy flames coming out of the roof, NOFD officials said.
Due to cold temperatures and high winds, a second alarm was called around midnight to bring more firefighters to the scene. The fire was brought under control by 12:15 a.m., but not before claiming the life of a 66-year-old woman in the second floor of the house.
According to NOFD officials, the woman was the caregiver for her 91-year-old father at the home. The father was on the first floor when the fire broke out and was able to get out of the house safely.
No other injuries were reported.
The investigation into the cause of the fire was ongoing, officials said.
In total, 18 trucks carrying 37 NOFD firefighters responded to the blaze.
No further information was immediately available.
Editor's Note: A previous version of this report stated the fire happened in the 2600 block of Annette Street, in the Seventh Ward, per the NOFD. The story has been updated to show the fire happened in Gentilly, in the 4600 block, according to the NOPD.
