NEW ORLEANS — The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office is celebrating 50 years of Thanksgiving Day tradition by serving up meals to an expected 2,500 at the Ernest M. Morial Convention on Thursday.
The event began at 10 a.m. and will run through 1 p.m.
Those attending include parish residents who are economically insecure, residing in assisted living facilities and homeless shelters.
More than 200 volunteers are needed to help run the event.
“I brought plates of food to the tables for our guests and then took time to talk to many of them,” recalled Sheriff Susan Hutson in an earlier interview with WWL Louisiana media partner NOLA.com. “You could immediately feel it was holidays, and that is how it should be. It was truly an amazing, experience, and I am excited to celebrate its 50th anniversary.”
In addition to the traditional Thanksgiving meal, coat giveaways, raffles and live music by popular New Orleans performers Irma Thomas, Leo Nocentelli and other special guests.
