NEW ORLEANS — The man who was released from Orleans Parish jail without a court-ordered ankle monitor is now back in jail.

Lewis Stokes, 36, was arrested early Monday morning in the 3300 block of Kabel Drive in Algiers by the U.S. Marshals New Orleans Task Force, which includes officials from the New Orleans Police Department, Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office, Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office and more than half a dozen other law enforcement agencies.

He bonded out of jail on Nov. 15 after having been charged with domestic abuse, child endangerment, and assault.

A judge required Stokes to wear a court-ordered ankle monitor to track his movements 24 hours a day, but a sheriff's office employee did not follow the order.

Stokes is accused of attacking a woman a few hours after his release. He will receive an additional charge in Orleans Parish due to his not fulfilling the conditions of his release.

“We have learned from our partners at the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office that shortly after Stokes was released, he assaulted another victim around 2:00 a.m. at her home. He is now charged with two misdemeanor counts of domestic abuse battery in Jefferson Parish. At this time, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office is assisting OPSO with the search for Stokes,” an Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said.

Stokes, who previously served a 15-year sentence for armed robbery in Jefferson Parish, is being charged with second-degree battery from an incident that involved him allegedly striking another detainee at the OJC while previously in custody.

The OPSO Internal Services Bureau obtained a warrant for Stokes regarding the incident  while he was on the run.
