NEW ORLEANS — Two deputies from the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office were placed on suspension Friday afternoon following an investigation of a detainee being assaulted by other inmates.
The deputies involved were questioned this afternoon and immediately suspended without pay. Officials said the incident occurred on Tuesday, Oct. 17, around 12:41 p.m., when the detainee was assaulted by two other inmates in a housing unit of the Orleans Justice Center.
Officials said they sustained bruises to the left side of the face and a fractured nose.
Surveillance video show the deputies in the control center instead of following their assignment in the housing unit passing out food.
Around 4:41 p.m. the detainee informed the deputy and their attorney of the assault and they were taken to a nurse in the facility.
Both inmates involved in the assault were written up for violations. The assault is being investigated by the Investigative Services Bureau.
Officials say the deputies will be suspended without pay until the Internal Affairs Division completes its investigation.
