WESTWEGO, La. — A fatal crash in Westwego on Thursday afternoon leaves one dead and three injured. The accident also caused the closure of the Lapalco Bridge.
Jefferson Parish deputies said the crash happened around 3:12 p.m. near Bayou Segnette. Deputies said they believe two pickup trucks were traveling in opposite directions on the bridge. The driver of the westbound truck crossed over the center line and collided head-on with the eastbound truck carrying two juvenile passengers.
The driver of the westbound truck was dead on the scene.
JP deputies said the man driving the eastbound truck was taken to a nearby hospital, along with the two juveniles. Their condition is not known at this time.
A toxicology will be conducted to determine the cause of the crash.
The Lapalco Brige remains closed at this time, and will remain closed for at least 1-2 more hours.
Traffic is currently being diverted at Nicolle/Segnette Blvds. on the west side of the bridge and Tanglewood Dr. on the east side. Drivers are urged to avoid the area and take alternate routes.
