Teen escapes from detention center, goes on crime spree, says sheriff's office

WASHINGTON PARISH -- A Bush-area teen escaped from a juvenile detention center in Alabama and then went on a crime spree in St. Tammany Parish burglarizing three convenience stores, according to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office.

Jordan Cox, 16, was arrested Wednesday morning in Washington Parish.

He was driving a GMC Sonoma reported stolen from a Tangipahoa Parish campground. The vehicle was also suspected to be involved in several business burglaries in St. Tammany Parish, according to the sheriff's office

Cox was caught by police in the Sonoma in Washington Parish Wednesday morning. He tried to run from the sheriff's office after deputies tried to pull him over. Cox led police on a brief chase before crashing truck just 50 feet from the St. Tammany Parish line.

According to sheriff's office, items taken during the burglaries were found inside the GMC Sonoma following the crash.

"Cox has confessed to the business burglaries, but detectives believe he did not act alone. Investigators are looking for other individuals who were with him when he burglarized the Abita Jr. Food Mart on July 22nd, the TPN Quick Stop on July 26th in Sun, LA, and the Community Grocery in Bush on July 26th," said a statement sheriff's office.

He was booked into the Washington Parish Jail on charges stemming from the traffic stop and the stolen pickup truck. St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s detectives have also obtained warrants for his arrest for three counts of Simple Burglary. Cox will eventually be booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail.
