AMITE CITY, La. — The Tangipahoa Parish courthouse has been cleared for reopening after it was evacuated when a suspicious package dropped off by a person who identifies as a "sovereign citizen," was spotted at the location earlier Friday.

Parish President Robbie Miller said that officials were given the all clear."

A Louisiana State Police bomb squad was on the scene at the courthouse in Amite, along with Tangipahoa Parish Homeland Security.

NOLA.com's report says that the FBI identifies "sovereign citizens" as someone in a somewhat loose movement that believes  "the government is operating outside of its jurisdiction and generally do not recognize federal, state, or local laws, policies, or governmental regulations."

Chief Travis asks the public to avoid the area, and as the situation develops more information will become available.
