ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. — The St. Tammany Parish president joined in the chorus of Northshore politicians speaking out Friday against the coroner-elect.
Those abuse charges against Coroner-elect Christopher Tape , including one related to a 7-year-old girl, had been uncovered during a David Hammer Investigation in February.
"I fully support the calling of a new election for the office of coroner," Cooper said on Friday, adding that Tape's predecessor, Dr. Charles Preston had "failed" to pick a successor.
Parish President Mike Cooper's statement came hours after councilmembers unanimously Coroner-elect Tape to resign.
Cooper said he did not know about Tape's history when the coroner was elected.
"My only meeting with Dr. Tape was in mid-January, prior to my knowledge of the allegations against him," Parish President Cooper said. "The purpose of the meeting was to discuss legislation to restore trust and accountability in the coroner's office."
During their overnight meeting, the St. Tammany Parish council also voted unanimously to require background checks for all coroner employees.
