Pearl River shooting, 12-hour manhunt ends in two arrests

PEARL RIVER, La. - Seeing police surround her home Wednesday morning sent Kerri Champagne into hiding.

"Had the garage closed because I was home by myself," she said.

Officers were searching around a home on Peach Street for two things-- Randy Lail, and the gun they say he used to shoot a 21-year-old woman in the face before midnight.

Police said at the time of the shooting, the woman was a passenger in a car parked at the home, where the driver lived and where Lail stayed for a brief time recently.

She's recovering from surgery on her lower jaw at a New Orleans hospital.

"This is an isolated incident, it's over an argument, maybe a little bit more," said Police Chief J.J. Jennings. "But we're still trying to unravel this and trying to get more information."

Information came in quickly through tips and social media, and shortly before noon, led to the discovery of Lail at I-59 Trailer Park.

Lail later led police to the gun, a .9 mm rifle, that he threw in a ditch just down the street from a school.

"It's great that people pull together, to know to get this guy off the street, let us know, we work on it, we've been working on it since 11:20 last night and here it is, not even 11:30, and we got him," said Jennings.

Though there were a few tense hours for the neighborhood, residents said they're glad to see their police department's hard work pay off.

"I'm glad that they stayed on top of it and got it solved so quickly," said Champagne.

In a town that hasn't had a shooting in almost a decade, leaders hope it's even longer before they see another.

A second man from the trailer was arrested for harboring a fugitive. In addition to attempted second-degree murder, Lail was booked as a felon in possession of a weapon.
