25,000 still without power on Northshore Thursday, after storms

Creekside Junior High in Pearl River has remained open Thursday as a shelter after storms battered St. Tammany Parish and surrounding areas.

ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. — One shelter remained open Thursday morning as 25,000 were reported without power in St. Tammany Parish, in the aftermath of an EF-2 tornado and heavy winds that battered the area.

"Utility crews are in our community to restore power," St. Tammany Public Information Director Michael Vinsanau said a day after Wednesday's storms. "It may take a few days to fully restore."

Creekside Junior High School in Pearl River has served as a shelter, with two still inside as of Thursday morning, the St. Tammany Government said. Eight people slept inside the shelter overnight.

"We are continuing to monitor river levels, although all of them have either crested or are expected to crest before getting to levels of concern," St. Tammany Parish Government said Thursday.

St. Tammany Parish has also offered Northshore residents food and water and other forms of assistance, with Fritchie Park in Slidell serving as a distribution point for those resources.

"Ice and water are expected to be available at 9 a.m." St. Tammany Parish said Thursday morning. "Tarps are available now. Lunch will be served at 11:30 and dinner at 5:30."

Despite the damage to parish businesses and homes, no deaths have been reported by St. Tammany Parish officials after Wednesday's storms.

St. Tammany Parish public schools were closed Thursday, as the parish recovers from the storm.
