Northshore residents riled at Louisiana utility provider following loss of water

Sunday morning, several Northshore neighborhoods woke up to no water at all.

MANDEVILLE, La. — Residents in some parts of Mandeville are under a boil water advisory.

Sunday morning, several neighborhoods woke up to no water at all.

Mo Chiasson lives in the Monterey Subdivision. When he woke up around 4:30 a.m., he said his water pressure was low.

“It started off strong, but then it went to a trickle," Chiasson said.

Chiasson, and many others, eventually lost water for several hours on Sunday.

Chiasson said the utility provider, Magnolia Water Utility Company, did not send him any notification that there was an outage or boil water advisory.

“People are very frustrated about the water situation, it being numerous times that this has happened to some of them," Chiasson said.

In a Facebook post, Magnolia stated there was an "Unplanned Service Outage w/Boil / Interruption of service with boil water advisory."

The post says the affected service area is the Monterey system, but it did not include a map or streets. It is unclear how many customers are affected.

Monterey Property Association Board Member, Dennis Wilkins, said there are 135 homes in the subdivision.

“Typically, we’ll get an email from Magnolia letting us know that there’s a problem. Some people got it, some others didn’t, and this is like the third time in the last six or seven months this has happened, and all three times it’s been a power outage," Wilkins said.

Wilkins said his wife received an email notification, but he did not after previously confirming with the company that his email was on the list.

Yard signs throughout the area stated there was a boil water advisory, but some homeowners said they were not aware of the advisory.

Don Orlando lives outside of the Monterey subdivision. He lost water and said he received an email, but he would prefer a different form of notification.

“It’s a Sunday afternoon so not many folks are checking email so a text or something that’s a little bit more in front," Orlando said.

Orlando said Magnolia seems to charge higher prices and not inform customers or the public of outages and advisories as well as public utilities.

Magnolia's website mentions the advisory.

"If you have questions concerning this matter or would like to receive future notifications, please contact customer support via the phone number [+1 (855) 643-8152] and email [provided]," the website states.

Magnolia did not immediately respond to WWL Louisiana's request for comment on Sunday, but did reply Monday afternoon.

A company spokesperson said he outage was not caused by a loss of power as originally reported, but rather by a mechanical failure early Sunday morning.

The outage impacted approximately 525 customers, 300 of which are said to be opted in to Magnolia's text notifications on the company's website.

The company also expects the boil advisory to be lifted by Tuesday morning.
