No-kill shelter at capacity, animals at risk of euthanization

“We need space, we need your help,” said St. Tammany Parish Department of Animal Services Director, Rob Bremer.

LACOMBE, La. — The no-kill animal shelter in St. Tammany parish says they are busting at the seams with dogs and cats that were dropped off during and after the storm. Now the shelter is above capacity and many of the dogs are at risk of euthanasia if residents don’t step in and help.

“We don’t want to exceed our capacity for care. I don’t want to take animals out of one bad situation and then put them into another one that we are doing,” said Rob Bremer the St. Tammany Parish Department of Animal Services director.

On Monday, WWL Louisiana toured the shelter with Bremer, there were dogs everywhere, and the kennels were filled with multiple dogs in each.

“We can keep up to three in each kennel,” said Bremer. “But you start to get resource guarding, you start getting food aggression, stuff like that. It’s not ideal.”

Corbin Andera, a regular volunteer, was there helping and bringing a friend to adopt one of the dogs.

“The dogs here need more love than regular dogs,” said Andera. “Once we leave for the day, they are stuck, they don’t get to come out, they don’t get to play.”

Bremer says the shelter is under a “Mayday” call which means the dogs that have been in the shelter the longest are at risk of being euthanized if they aren’t adopted or fostered.

“We need space, we need your help,” said Bremer.

An announcement on the department’s Facebook page says some adoption fees are being sponsored this week.

You can see all animals at the shelter at www.stpgov.org/pets. Our adoption hours are Monday-Friday 10a-4p and Saturday 8a-4p.
