Mandeville Police shoot and kill man who they say fatally shot a woman fleeing from home

The sheriff’s office said that as officers converged on the scene, the woman ran from the home and said that the man inside was trying to kill her.

MANDEVILLE, La. — A Mandeville police officer shot and killed a man who fatally shot a woman running from a home and screaming for help Friday evening, the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office said Saturday.

The incident occurred in the 700 block of Heavens Drive.

According to the sheriff’s office, police officers from the Mandeville PD went to the home for a welfare check and heard a woman screaming inside.

The sheriff’s office said that as officers converged on the scene, the woman ran from the home and said that the man inside was trying to kill her. Police said that the man came out of the home armed with a gun and shot the woman several times.

Mandeville Police then attempted to negotiate with the man while taking cover and waiting for backup.

The sheriff’s office said that one officer attempted to tase the man who then pointed a gun at officers. One of the officers fired and struck the man.

Both the man and woman were taken to the hospital where they were later pronounced dead.

Their bodies were turned over to the coroner’s office.

“This is an example of the dangers members of law enforcement face every day when they put on their uniform,” Sheriff Randy Smith said. “Thankfully all of the officers came home safe last night, but it could very easily end very differently. My prayers go out to the families affected by this tragic incident.”
