Grand jury indicts Daniel Callihan, Victoria Cox for murder, kidnapping

Daniel Callihan, 36, and Victoria Cox were indicted on four charges each.

AMITE, La. — A Tangipahoa Parish grand jury has indicted a man and a woman on four charges after they were suspected of killing a Loranger mother and her 4-year-old daughter in a case that spawned a massive manhunt across two states last week.

Daniel Callihan, 36, was indicted on two charges of first-degree murder, one count of aggravated kidnapping of a child and one count of second-degree kidnapping. Victoria Cox was indicted on one count of first-degree murder, one count of aggravated kidnapping of a child, one count of second-degree kidnapping and one count of being an accessory after the fact.

District Attorney Scott Perrilloux said he hopeful that Callihan and Cox will be returned to Tangipahoa Parish and be arraigned in person soon.

As for whether he would be asking for the death penalty, Perrilloux said, "That has not been decided yet. I would like to have more discussion with the family on that. It’s a big decision. I have my thoughts on it, but I’d rather not share them right now."

Last week, Callie Brunett, 35, was found stabbed to death in her Loranger home. Her two daughters, ages 4 and 6, had been taken. Dozens of law enforcement personnel participated in the search, which, unfortunately, ended in Jackson, Mississippi, with the capture of Callihan and Cox and the discovery of the death of four-year-old Erin Brunett.

The other kidnapped daughter was found alive and physically unharmed.

The funeral for Callie and Erin Brunett is being held Thursday in Hammond. The grand jury began meeting at 9 a.m. Thursday.

Callihan is currently jailed in Mississippi and faces charges there as well. Federal charges could also be coming.
