Five teens 16 and under arrested after police chase of stolen vehicle

According to the police, the teens were driving in a vehicle without lights in a residential area, a tactic they say is often used by people committing burglaries.

COVINGTON, La. — Five teens between the ages of 14 and 16 were arrested in the Hammond area last Friday after Covington Police said they were chased in a stolen car while wearing masks and gloves.

According to the police, the teens were driving in a vehicle without lights on in a residential area, a tactic they say is often used by people trying to commit vehicle burglaries.

When Police attempted to stop the vehicle, it sped off and a chase that included the Tangipahoa Sheriff’s Office and State ensued on I-12 and then to I-55 before stopping in the Hammond area on Wardline Road.

Police said the teens then attempted to run away. A 16-year-old girl was arrested on the scene and four teenaged boys were arrested in various locations nearby a short time later.

The teens, whose names are being withheld, were booked on the following counts.

  • A 16-year-old female has been booked into the Florida Parishes Juvenile Detention Center on one count each of Possession of Stolen Property, Aggravated Flight and Resisting an Officer (By Foot).
  • A 15-year-old male has been booked into the Florida Parishes Juvenile Detention Center on the same charges as the female but with an additional count of Vehicle Theft.
  • A 14-year-old male and two 16-year-old males have been booked into the Florida Parishes Juvenile Detention Center on two counts of Vehicle Theft and one count each of Aggravated Flight and Resisting an Officer (By Foot).
