Covington High teacher arrested, accused of lewd conduct involving a student

Police said the teacher and student had sexual contact on at least one occasion

COVINGTON, La. -- A Northshore teacher is in custody after police say she committed a lewd act with a student.

The former Covington High School teacher, 36-year-old Kelli Lynn Burbach, had befriended a student according to police. On at least one occasion, Burbach drove the student away from campus to a secluded area and committed a lewd or lascivious act.

Friday afternoon, detectives secured an arrest warrant and Burbach was taken into custody without incident.

She will be booked with prohibited sexual conduct between an educator and student, officials said.

Burbach's husband, Tim Burbach, filed for divorce May 2 alleging Kelli committed adultery.

The petition cites Kelli's "inappropriate relationships with ex students" and "an extremely inappropriate" relationship with a current student as the reason for the split. The filing alleges Kelli engaged in sex acts with former students as well.

The court documents indicate Burbach was a special education teacher at Covington High School and had been called in for a disciplinary hearing by the administration after rumors of a sex tape of her and a student circulated around the school.

In screen shots of text messages included in the divorce filing that were allegedly exchanged with Kelli, she denies the existence of such a tape.

Covington Police said they received the complaint about Kelli Burbach on April 12 alleging she was having an inappropriate relationship with a student and they began an investigation.
