ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. — The St. Tammany Parish coroner Dr. Charles Preston says the Covington child who was injured in an ATV accident last week has died.
Preston identified the child as 7-year-old A’yana McDowell. McDowell was pronounced deceased Monday morning.
“This is a tragedy of unspeakable proportions and my staff and I grieve for this young child’s family and friends,” said Parish Coroner Dr. Charles Preston. “The sad reality is that accidents of this type happen all too often and frequently, children are the victims. Parents and owners of ATVs are urged to exercise the most extreme caution possible when providing young children access or rides on these dangerous recreational vehicles. While accidents do happen, many can be avoided and lives can be saved by close parental or adult supervision and the use of helmets and safety gear.”
The crash happened near United Church Road around 4 p.m. on December 11. Deputies say the ATV went off the road and hit a tree. An adult female and McDowell were ejected upon impact. Both were taken to the hospital but McDowell had to be airlifted.
