Amtrak train collides with SUV at Slidell railroad crossing

Police said the SUV was stopped on the tracks as the train approached.

SLIDELL, La. — An Amtrak passenger train crashed into a 2021 Chevrolet Suburban at a railroad crossing near Gause Boulevard and Front Street in Slidell on Monday morning.

According to Slidell PD, calls began pouring into the station alerting authorities to the incident that occurred shortly after 10 a.m.

Police said the late-model SUV was stopped on the tracks as the train approached.

The local couple occupying the vehicle claim they inadvertently shifted the transmission into park and were unable to move the SUV prior to the collision.

None of the train's passengers were injured, but the SUV's occupants were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Amtrak also said the train was not damaged and once the crossing reopened, it continued on its way to New York after a 40-minute delay.
