AMITE CITY, La. — Recovery efforts are underway in Amite City after severe weather battered homes and businesses on Tuesday night.
As of Wednesday afternoon, hundreds of customers were still without power.
Around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Mark Mohr was sitting at his desk at Amite Portable Buildings.
“Everything was in disarray,” Sales Manager at Amite Portable Buildings Mark Mohr said.
Moments later, he was huddled in the corner as the walls of his office started to shake.
“So here I am, trapped stuck in the corner, holding on for dear life,” Mohr said.
Then, he hears this.
On Tuesday night, severe weather and high winds damaged homes and businesses across the city.
“The wind was so rough. It was just pounding against the building, just pounding profusely,” More said.
Those pounding winds left one tree laying in a home on East Chessnut, and across town, the storm ripped the roof off of a business.
According to Mohr, a red shed stood beside his office, but the wind picked it up off the ground and threw it across the lot.
“I’m standing right here at my door, and next thing I know, these two buildings start to roll over and fall over,” Mohr said.
As families and businesses try to move forward, the city’s leadership wants Amite residents to know one thing.
“The top priority is making sure the residents are safe and secure,” Amite City Mayor Walter Daniels said. “If anyone has any damage, just report to us and anything we can do to help them we are willing to do.
Right now, it is unknown whether or not a tornado touched down in Amite City on Tuesday.
