NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Police Department announced the death of a retired Mounted Unit horse on Monday.

According to the NOPD, the 26-year-old red Rhone, Warm Blood named Elvis' had been retired from patrol duty in 2021 due to old age and health. The horse died before being sent to a farm in Folsom, which is where older horses are relocated after retirement.

The NOPD says Elvis was acquired from the Angola State Penitentiary in 2001 and faithfully served the Mounted Unit and New Orleans for 20 years.

A statement from the NOPD states:

"The NOPD, especially the Mounted Unit, is greatly saddened by the passing of this noble ambassador for our city."
